Dream Theater’s drummer, Mike Portnoy who has just rejoined the band shared an interesting story of when he was close to performing in a special gig with Nickelback. Portnoy reveals that he was keen on playing on the gig with the rock band, despite some negative remarks being placed on Chad Kroeger and co.
Mike Portnoy Reveals His Special Story with Nickelback
Having just shocked the world with his recent announcement of rejoining Dream Theater again, Portnoy revealed another surprise for the music world during his recent drum content with the Drumeo channel. In a special segment where he was supposed to play his version of a musician’s song, the renowned drummer had to play one track from Nickelback which prompted him to eminence an important moment.
Sharing his memories with everyone, Portnoy revealed that he was really close to joining Nickelback for a special gig in the spring of 2022 but unfortunately, it didn’t happen. Despite the rock band’s being a bit hated notably in the US, the Dream Theater drummer stated that he was looking forward to playing with Chad Kroeger and co back then.
Sadly, that potentially shocking and special event never happened as the festival that was set to be held in Vancouver, Canada got canceled. Notably, during that time there were still some shows that didn’t go through as it was not long after the normalization following the recent Covid outbreak. Portnow believes that should he take the gig with Nickelback it would have been an excellent show that the drum legend will enjoy.
On the Drumeo content, Portnoy ends up playing his version of Nickelback ‘Burn it To The Ground’, which he couldn’t remember whether it was on the set list for the canceled gig. The Winery Dogs’ drummer admitted that he didn’t listen much to the Canadian rockers’ stuff before, so he didn’t know what track he was asked to play and just worked on it based on what he considered suitable.
Portnoy Also Talks About Dream Theater’s New Album Plan
Aside from showcasing his drum-playing skills and sharing that special Nickelback story, MP also talked a bit regarding his plan for the band’s new album. Although the band ensured that they would be working on a new record soon, Portnoy stated that he still doesn’t quite know much details about it aside from they will start working later this year.
The legendary drummer revealed that he must first finish some of the other commitments he has with other bands and musicians, notably his other renowned band, The Winery Dogs. Portnoy admits that once he finishes his remaining schedule, he will turn all of his focus on making new stuff for DT.
