Guitar maestro, Paul Gilbert, recently shared an interesting and funny story regarding his close relationship with fellow guitarist and former student, Buckethead. In an interview with Lee Anderton on his Andertons Music Co YouTube channel, Gilbert revealed a story about the present he received from the ex-Guns N’Roses axeman some years back.

PG and Anderton were discussing many things on the YouTube channel, and suddenly stumbled upon a topic about sound and amps. The Captain was asking what Gilbert’s most satisfying sound was, which the Mr. Big guitarist answered was during his time with Racer X.

The guitar guru went on the reveal that the song was a cover of Judas Priest’s ‘Heart of a Lion’, in which Gilbert also played with a Lee Jackson Marshall amp. However, PG did admit that Racer X did a quadruple tracking on it.
While sharing about his favourite sound, the discussion suddenly shifted to Gilbert’s latest meet-up with Buckethead. The former student was gifted PG’s guitar lessons and went to visit him in Portland to hang out.
Aside from playing and jamming around, Buckethead also gifted Paul a special present, which was a modified Lee Jackson Marshall amp head. It looks like the former pupil was also in love with his teacher’s Racer X sound and wanted to hear it again.
Unfortunately, Gilbert didn’t quite like the sound from the amp that was gifted to him, for whatever reason. Jokingly, he stated that it sounded ‘awful’ and not as good as during his Racer X time, notably when he and his band were playing that ‘Heart of a Lion’ track.
Nevertheless, Gilbert thinks the reason for the different sound is maybe that his ear might have changed throughout the years, or it could just be because of the old tube issue. Sometimes, as nostalgic as we may be, revisiting an old sound with a modified amp might not be the solution. The important thing is that PG and his ex-protege were still having a fun musical time.
Gilbert remains affectionate with his former student, as not long ago, he even released a special record dedicated to the man whose real name is Brian Patrick Carroll.
Aside from the funny Buckethead story, Gilbert also shared many exciting and interesting guitar stories. So, do check out the full video here:
